Getting Started

Good morning. I'm looking for advise. A few years back my husband became unable to control his depression/PTSD due to a nasty series of events for our family. He is not able to be treated with the usual depression/anxiety meds due to severe reactions. He has recently become a medical marijuana patient. Our issue is that he is unable to hold a job for more than a few months and now he can't pass a drug screen. I was forced to quit my past two jobs due to taking too much time off of work and constant disruptions during the workday. If I'm not in the home, he can't function. We are both out of work right now but can't apply for state aid because they have a work program that we can't adhere too. The worker said I should try to become his caretaker in order to receive assistance. He's only 40, can I legally become his caretaker? I never considered it. How would I go about it? I'm I'm New York state of that helps. Thanks so much for any help.
