Is there a support group or class for the adult child of an elderly parent with bipolar?

Wondering if anyone has found a support group or educational class to help adult family members with an aging parent who has a mental illness?  Thanks for ideas!

Hi, Barbara!

Hi, Barbara!

I am Nichole and I am one of the staff here at Caregiver Action Network. Thank you for reaching out on the Care Community.

Depending on your location, there may be a number of options in your area. A first step I would suggest is reaching out to the Caregiver Help Desk. The Caregiver Help Desk staff will talk with you about specific things you may be looking for (example: are you looking for a support group/educational class that meets in-person or is virtual? is there a specific topic or issue you're wanting an educational class to focus on? etc.) and walk through some options that are available.

You can reach the Help Desk by phone at 855-227-3640 or via chat by clicking the orange "Help Desk" button on the right corner of the screen. You can reach someone live Monday through Friday, 8AM to 7PM Eastern, but you're able to leave a voicemail - or send your chat message as an e-mail - if you reach out outside of those hours. The Help Desk is very quick in getting back to folks, usually within a business day or two.

I hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to be in touch if I can be of any further assistance.

Yes, there are support groups

Yes, there are support groups and classes specifically tailored to adults who are caring for elderly parents with bipolar disorder. These groups provide a safe and understanding space for individuals to share their experiences, learn coping strategies, and gain valuable insights from others facing similar challenges. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) often host support groups and educational programs that cater to caregivers of individuals with bipolar disorder, including those caring for elderly parents. These groups offer emotional support, practical guidance, and a sense of community for caregivers navigating the complexities of supporting a loved one with bipolar disorder in their later years.
