Healthcare providers generally need the patient's written or verbal permission to share their medical information with you.

"HIPAA controls whether or not I can receive information regarding the present & past medical status of my son. Without his written permission, I cannot receive info unless he is declared incompetent, and I can then request info.

In that case, I have a signed mental health release form, which allows me to receive and dictate medical care. For example, if he is hospitalized, I do not have access to information from any of the medical and supportive personnel regarding his condition.

I am unable to schedule medical appointments for him or obtain verification regarding appointments."
