African American communities in the U.S. have experienced a long history of mistreatment by healthcare institutions, such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, where treatment was intentionally withheld from African American men. 

This and other incidents, like involuntary sterilizations and biased treatment, have caused generations of distrust.

That mistrust continues to influence the willingness of many to seek medical or mental health care.
