Caregiver Action Network Statement on HHS Secretary RFK Jr. Firing of ACIP Members

June 12, 2025

Caregiver Action Network (CAN) expresses deep concern over the abrupt dismissal of all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

ACIP is a respected, science‑based body that has guided vaccine recommendations for over 60 years, ensuring public safety—particularly for our most vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, chronically ill, and their devoted caregivers. Its decisions have shaped which vaccines are recommended for whom, when, and at what cost—directly affecting insurance coverage and access via programs like Vaccines for Children.

Potential Impacts on Caregivers & Loved Ones

  • Interrupted Vaccine Schedules: Families rely on the integrity and continuity of vaccine guidelines. Swift removal of expert voices could delay updates to immunization schedules—undermining timely care.
  • Erosion of Trust: Caregivers depend on clear, consistent public health guidance. A politicized overhaul risks causing confusion and hesitancy in vulnerable households.
  • Increased Health Risks: Vulnerable populations—infants, pregnant women, immunocompromised loved ones—rely on ACIP-endorsed vaccines to shield against preventable diseases. Disruption in expert oversight may lead to gaps in protection and spikes in illness.

Moving Forward Together

CAN urges:

  1. Swift appointment of a diverse, transparent, science-led ACIP that reflects public health needs—not politics.
  2. Reaffirmation of evidence-based decision-making, so caregivers can confidently follow trusted vaccine recommendations.
  3. Open communication to directly address caregivers’ questions and fears, reinforcing that vaccine policy remains a protected, nonpartisan domain focused on safety.

Our Call to Action

Caregivers stand at the intersection of healthcare and advocacy, often tasked with ensuring loved ones receive vital immunizations. We call on HHS to act decisively to restore stability, transparency, and confidence in vaccine guidance—so caregivers can continue protecting those who depend on them.
