Overview of Tardive Dyskinesia (TD)

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements, primarily affecting the face, tongue, and mouth, but also potentially other parts of the body. These movements can include grimacing, lip smacking, tongue protruding, rapid eye blinking, and jerky arm and leg movements.

Most often, TD is a side effect of long-term treatment with certain medications, particularly antipsychotic medications, which are prescribed for conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

Up to an estimated 800,000 adults in the United States live with TD. Black individuals are reported to be nearly twice as likely to develop TD as white people.
