WASHINGTON, DC – Caregiver Action Network (CAN), the nation’s leading family caregiver organization, is proud to announce the appointment of Barry J. Jacobs, Psy.D., to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Jacobs is a nationally recognized clinical psychologist, family therapist, healthcare consultant, author, and speaker whose work over three decades has profoundly shaped the field of caregiving. A former magazine journalist, he has written extensively on caregiver coping and authored influential works including The Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers and The AARP Caregiver Answer Book, as well as writing a caregiver self-help column for AARP.org since 2013. Over the course of his career, Dr. Jacobs has delivered more than 700 presentations to family caregivers, healthcare providers, and social service professionals and care managers. He maintains an in-person and virtual psychotherapy practice in Media PA where he specializes in supporting older adults with serious or chronic illnesses and their family caregivers. For seven years, he was the primary caregiver for his mother with vascular dementia and stepfather with Alzheimer’s disease.
