The nurse in a memory care unit is concerned about one of the residents who has already fallen twice—but can’t remember to use his walker.
When she sees him stand up and try to walk, she rushes in from behind, looking stressed, and demands that he use his walker while scolding him. The resident becomes agitated and is non-cooperative.
On the second try, she approaches him from the front with a smile on her face, addresses him respectfully, jokes around, and flatters him. She uses the word “buggy” instead of walker because that’s what he calls it.
In response, he willingly uses his walker to leave the room.
