Understanding the benefits, programs, and entitlements offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can help caregivers and veterans access critical support.
VA caregiver support programs
The VA offers two main caregiver support programs.
The Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS) is available to caregivers of veterans enrolled in VA healthcare and provides education, training, peer support, and respite care.
The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) offers additional benefits for caregivers of eligible veterans with serious injuries, including a monthly stipend, health insurance (if not otherwise covered), mental health counseling, and at least 30 days of respite care per year.
To apply for PCAFC, the veteran must have a VA disability rating of 70%, serious injury incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, and the caregiver must provide personal care services.
The Caregiver Support Line (1-855-260-3274) can answer questions and help with applications.
Travel, lodging, and financial assistance
Veterans may be eligible for travel reimbursement for VA healthcare appointments.
The Beneficiary Travel program reimburses eligible veterans for mileage, tolls, and parking, or provides special transportation when medically necessary. Veterans can file claims through the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System (BTSSS) online or at their local VA facility.
For veterans receiving treatment far from home, the Fisher House program provides free temporary lodging for families of veterans undergoing treatment at VA medical centers.
Additionally, some veterans may qualify for financial assistance through VA pension programs or Aid and Attendance benefits if they require help with daily activities.
How to ask for help—and who to ask
Navigating VA benefits can be overwhelming.
Caregivers should start by contacting the VA Caregiver Support Line (1-855-260-3274) or the local Caregiver Support Coordinator at their VA facility.
Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) such as the American Legion, VFW, and DAV offer free assistance with benefits claims and can help families understand available programs.
Patient advocates at each VA facility can help resolve concerns about care quality or access. Social workers can connect families with community resources and assist with discharge planning.
For benefits questions, the VA benefits hotline (1-800-827-1000) provides information on eligibility and applications.
