Unique Challenges of Working Caregivers

Key Implications for Caregivers and Veterans

Financial & Medical Support

Veterans may receive a temporary 100% disability rating during active treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) and for six months after, followed by ratings for long-term residual issues.

If a veteran’s bladder cancer remains active, VA will extend their temporary and total disability rating until the cancer goes into remission. Once veterans stop receiving treatment due to remission, the VA will schedule a follow-up exam to reevaluate the condition.

Caregiver Benefits

If the veteran requires personal care services, caregivers may qualify for training, mental health counseling, and a monthly stipend.

Survivor Benefits

Surviving spouses and dependents may be eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and health care benefits (CHAMPVA).

Support Services

Caregivers can access VA social workers for help with transportation, respite care, and accessing community resources.
